WHAT IF WE MADE A BEER FOR EACH NEIGHBORHOOD IN PITTSBURGH?

Back in 2019, we were doing a lot of thinking on what it meant to be brewing beer in Pittsburgh for the last 15 years. What it means to be a "local brewery", what it means to brew beer for locals to enjoy, and how people become connected with that notion. For anyone that doesn't know, Pittsburgh very much is a city of neighborhoods, each with their own identity and fiercely loyal populace.

We landed on a big idea, one that would celebrate the diverse field of neighborhoods in our fair city. We would brew a unique beer for each and every neighborhood in Pittsburgh, all 90 of them, picked almost entirely at random. Initially there was some debate on the number of neighborhoods, but we acquired an official map from the City of Pittsburgh, which you can see HERE.

And so, that's what we did. The project lasted us just about five and a half years. Five and half years that saw a lot of change in our world. The project started before COVID19, lasted through lock down, during the creation of our own in-house pizza kitchen, launch of our second location in Mount Lebanon just south of Pittsburgh, and onward.

We used the project as an opportunity to get out and do pop-up releases in as many neighborhoods as we could, engage with our Pittsburgh home, and get folks to travel to parts of the city they'd never seen.

In November of 2024, we completed the YOU ARE HERE Project with the release of our final beer, Central Business District (aka downtown aka dahntahn), at Arcade Comedy Theater, and were gifted with a Proclamation by the City of Pittsburgh Council decreeing November 3rd, 2024, East End Brewing Company Day!
