You asked for it, so here's the list of places (as of 10/1/06) that have RECEIVED the now famous, wet-hopped, Big Hop Harvest Ale so far. When they tap it and how long it lasts may be another story... August Henry's Birmingham Bridge Tavern Boulevard Grill Brillobox Fatheads Gooski's The wait is over - Big Hop Harvest Ale is here, flowing freely at Growler Hours this week. Well, it's not really "free" (in fact, a growler of Harvest will run you a buck more than usual), but I can sure give you a taste. ABV for this brew came in a 7.1, so watch yourselves. I might even have some leftover hop cones around here someplace, for those looking for STILL MORE... Also, you can check out what the Post Gazette has to say about this special brew here. That's also where I stole this picture. Come taste what 250lbs of fresh-picked, undried hops can do for 30 barrels of beer - on TUESDAY Night at BRILLOBOX. The first taste hits the glass at 7pm...will it be yours? Address is 4104 Penn Ave in Bloomfield, or call 412-621-4900. I'll see you there! Cheers - Scott
WET-HOPPED GROWLERS OF BIG HOP - AUG 31 and SEP 2 ONLY!
Enjoy them while they're here - This Thursday and Saturday ONLY, you can get a preview of what a wet-hopped beer will be like, in your very own Growler. Every jug of your regular Big Hop IPA will come with fresh hop cones added right to the jug! Because the hops are so perishable, this treat will only be around for THIS WEEK. Neat, eh? See you here... Cheers - Scott
It's late August/early September, so that means the summer sun is putting the finishing touches on one of its finest creations of the year. No, I'm not talking about your tan...(It can't be all about you EVERY time now, can it?) It's HOP HARVEST TIME! About this time of year, I like to take your year-round favorite BIG HOP IPA, and do something really special with it to celebrate the September hop harvest. It's the Boujelais Nouveau of Beer - something that can only be brewed when the hops are fresh-picked from the vine...and that time is NOW. In this brief window of a couple days, I can get these wonderful fresh-picked, undried, green, local hops to toss into the kettle. These “wet hops” bring a wonderfully unique flavor and aroma to the beer, almost like the smell of freshly cut grass – if your lawn was completely planted with American hops! Thanks everyone, for all the input on the next session ale. You've given me LOTS of ideas about what I should brew next...not a dud in the bunch! Some are straight forward, some are more challenging, and some are made with ingredients that I don't have here at the moment... but I can remedy that easily enough. So, I'd say just keep an eye here, and I'll let you know what it is, just as soon as it hits the tank! - Scott 8-18-06 Name your beer - go ahead, I dare you. It's about time for me to brew another Session Ale, and I'm letting you pick it this time. There are only two limitations: 1. It still needs to fall into the "Session Ale" category , which by my definition runs between 3.5 and 4.5% alcohol. 2. For licensing reasons that I won't go into here, it needs to be made from "standard" ingredients. So that means no strawberry wheat beers please. Seems that there were some issues with getting the proper permits for the Drake's Follie Beer Fest this Saturday, so they had to cancel it. Details on the 4 Sons website here. This week, we're down to 4 beers: Pedal Pale Ale, Black Strap Stout, and East End Witte, and Session #4: Single Malt Ale. Big Hop is taking the week off to enjoy the slightly cooler weather. I made a quick overnight trip to New Jersey this past weekend with Jeff from Craft Beer Radio to attend the very last Open House at Heavyweight Brewing. As you may have heard, Tom and Peggy are closing up shop, and have plans to start a brewpub out their way some time in the near future. Good things for them, but rough for those of us who will no longer be able to find Heavyweight beers here in Pittsburgh. I've known Tom Baker a little while now, and since there aren't very many one-man breweries out there, I though it was important to make the pilgrimage to pay respects - a decision made considerably easier by Tom's stunning, mind bending, convention shattering beers, and their incredible hospitality. What an event! And to think I almost didn't go because I was tired. (Thanks Jeff!) |
